People are coming to stay, and the luggage situation is always worse than anyone admitted on the phone. The power liftgate opens while your hands are still full, and the roll-up cargo cover pulls across so the bags in the back aren't on display in whatever lot you end up in. Under the floor there's concealed storage for the things that shouldn't slide around, and cargo space lights for the loading you always seem to be doing once the light has gone. The hatch has an auto-latch, so nobody has to shut it twice. Fold the 60/40 rear seatback and something longer comes along too. Pulling back into your own driveway at the end of it, the HomeLink transmitter in the mirror opens the garage door without anybody hunting for the remote in the console.
Somewhere in the summer the plan turns into a day up the Strathcona Parkway to Mount Washington, where the alpine trails are, and the road up is exactly the sort that sorts vehicles out. Automatic full-time all-wheel drive with the electronic transfer case handles the wet corners without fuss, and the sport-tuned suspension with front and rear anti-roll bars and gas-pressurized shocks keeps it settled rather than floaty on the way back down. The 235/55R18 all-seasons have enough sidewall for a road surface that isn't always perfect, and splash guards keep some of what the gravel throws up off the paint. Fog lights earn their keep on the mornings the cloud sits right down in the valley. Open the first-row sunroof at the top with the sunshade back, and that's most of what anyone will remember about the day. Under the cargo floor there's a proper compact spare mounted inside rather than a repair kit, which is the sort of detail that matters on exactly one evening, and matters a great deal on that evening.
Then there's the run home down the Island Highway, later than you meant, in the half-light. Adaptive cruise control helps maintain your selected speed and following distance, so the concertina of end-of-weekend traffic is less of a job than it might be. The automatic high beams can help manage the stretches where the streetlights run out, and Collision Mitigation-Front is designed to help identify vehicles ahead and may intervene in certain situations. Blind Spot monitoring can warn you when somebody settles into the lane alongside where the mirrors are weakest, and Rear Collision Warning adds another set of eyes behind you. The heated leather steering wheel and the heated front sport bucket seats take the damp out of the last hour, the eight-way power driver's seat with power lumbar means you can get properly comfortable rather than just settling, and the auto-dimming rearview mirror keeps the headlights behind you from being the whole drive.
And then it goes back to being an ordinary vehicle for an ordinary wet week, which is what most of life actually is. The rear window has its own wiper and a defroster, and the front wipers have a heated wiper park, so the glass clears instead of the blade freezing down. The back-up camera does the looking when you reverse out of a stall you couldn't quite see out of. Dual-zone front automatic climate control means the driver who runs warm and the passenger who runs cold can both stop mentioning it, and the black power heated mirrors sort themselves out while you're still finding your travel mug. Inside there's a sliding front centre armrest and a rear centre armrest, rear cupholders, two seatback storage pockets, two 12-volt outlets and smart device integration through the front display, so the phone stays out of your hand. Deep tinted glass and a full cloth headliner keep it quieter than you'd expect. The 2.5L four and the 60-litre tank mean a long Island day doesn't turn into a hunt for a station, and there are curtain airbags across the first and second rows, a driver knee airbag, rear child safety locks and a perimeter alarm for the afternoons you park it somewhere and walk off.
Plainly, on warranty: a 2017 is past Toyota's five-year or 100,000 km powertrain coverage, and the price is set with that in mind. The listing page carries a generic "Balance of Factory Warranty" flag that the years don't support here, so please disregard it. Extended warranty options are available if you'd like some protection going forward, and we're happy to walk you through what's actually worth having rather than pointing you at the most expensive line on the sheet.
